SDG Book ‘Be the Change’: Worksheet 5 based on SDG 7: Affordable and Clean Energy was done in the class integrated with the SDG (Climate Action) for the month. The difference between non-renewable and renewable energy sources was discussed. Wind Energy was taken up in detail. Comprehension of the poem by Christina Rossetti was done in class along with the questions. Students wrote a paragraph on the thing wind can do as a writing practice. SCIENCEAir, water and weather The month commenced with the recapitulation of concepts like ‘Condensation’, ‘Precipitation’ and ‘Evaporation’ for a better understanding of the water cycle. Further, a ‘WATER CYCLE’ activity was performed where the students displayed all the processes involved in the water cycle using a zip lock transparent bag. Later, the learners were inquired about the different seasons we have in our country. They were asked to enlist some activities they do in different types of season. Thereafter, they learnt about the reason behind the change in seasons and also made a comparison between weather and season. This was followed by the Unit Test and discussion of the question paper. Students made notes on ‘Proper and Improper Fractions’ for a better learning, and practiced sorting out the two types of fractions. Students were introduced to Mixed Numbers and learnt to read and relate them to Improper Fractions. They practiced to write ‘Improper Fractions’ and ‘Mixed Numbers’ for the shaded portions, as part of a practice during the lesson. Their understanding of Fractions moved to another level with an introduction to ‘Fractions of a Collection or Set’, which was done with the help of real-life examples, video demonstration and practice of related questions, orally and in writing. Introduction to Measurements commenced with interesting inputs from students on the topic ‘Standard and Non-Standard Units of Measurement’. The novel minds discussed the cons of Non-Standard units and watched certain related videos. They got to know more about uniform and non-uniform, Non-Standard units of measuring lengths and learnt to measure by using a centimeter scale. Students measured various stationery and other household items, in centimeters and milli-meters, noted down their observations in the notebooks and shared their learning with their peers in the class. To enable the students connect with SDG goal –Clean water and Sanitation, they were asked to create a ‘Hygiene Chart’, highlighting the importance of protecting themselves from germs. To strengthen their learning, students researched about the devices used to measure airspeed, direction and pressure. Integrating the topic with English, students completed a ‘Paragraph Writing’ establishing the relation between air pollution and climate change. The new topic-‘Festivals’ was introduced in which students learnt about the importance of festivals as an integral part of our culture. The three types of festivals, their significance and examples were discussed extensively with the students. Time to time recapitulation through quizzes, oral and written revisions, was done to reinforce the learning which has taken place in the previous months. This also laid a foundation for the preparation of the Unit test. A ‘Map work' related to the harvest festivals was done to strengthen the visual-spatial skills of the learners. To increase awareness among the students, the significance of Vijay Diwas (16th December) was shared with them. They were enlightened about the fact that the day is observed to commemorate the victory of India in the 1971 war. The next topic ‘Sun and its Family’ was also introduced this month. INTER HOUSE GK QUIZ COMPETITIONInter-house GK Quiz “Questions are the engines of intellect, the cerebral machines which convert energy to motion, and curiosity to controlled enquiry.”-David Hackett Fischer Suncity School- 37 D organized the second edition of Inter-House GK Quiz Competition on the virtual platform in sync with Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsava. The theme of the quiz was My India, My Pride. The event aimed at enabling students to value, respect and know more about the rich heritage of our country. After the screening round, students were selected to represent their house in two categories: grades III-V and grades VI-IX. The rounds ranged from picking clues, audio –visuals and connecting the clues. The event concluded with the encouraging words of the principal Ms. Guneet Ohri. She motivated students to explore more about our country’s rich cultural heritage and value the contribution of our freedom fighters. Pacific House emerged as the winner in Grades III-V category an d Arctic House won in Grades VI-IX category.

mathematicsStudents were all hands-on for the Math-Art Integration Activity, creating their own FACT FAMILY HOUSES, bringing their understanding of Multiplication Tables into action. Students made Multiplication and Division Facts to make lovely Fact Family Houses using colored A-4 sheets and sketch pens. Proceeding further, young learners were introduced to the concept of Fractions and to the terms Numerator and Denominator, also making notes of the same. They developed an understanding of Reading Fractions and practiced the same. Students also learnt to draw and shade Fractions as Parts of a Whole. They got acquainted with Like and Unlike Fractions and learnt to differentiate the two and were also introduced to Unit Fractions. To enhance their understanding of Like and Unlike Fractions, students further learnt to compare Like Fractions. Towards the end of the month, they were introduced to Proper and Improper Fractions. Honing their observation skills and imagination to identify and complete the given patterns with colored cubes, students worked on the Shin Edu Activity-page 6. scienceMath- Science- Art Integration week Students of grade 3 were all geared up for the hands–on Science & Visual Art integration activities. They developed an understanding of different patterns obtained from reflection of light through CDs and also enjoyed making shadow puppets using their hands. Solid, Liquid and Gases The learners continued to develop their understanding of different states of matter and related their properties while observing the real-life examples. They further categorized several objects as solids, liquids and gases on the basis of their understanding of different states of matter with the help of a live worksheet and quiz. Later, they learnt about some natural phenomena like “Evaporation” and “Condensation” and understood how all states of matter can be converted into one another. Integrating the topic of the Environment with ICT, students located the Hindon river using ‘GOOGLE EARTH’ and researched the impact of industrialization and human activities, giving it the status of a “Dead River”. Taking the topic further, students learnt about the non-living components of the environment such as air and water. Integrating the topic of Air with Science, students conducted ‘EXPERIMENTS’ to understand the properties of air. They learnt about the composition of air through the ‘PIE CHART’ and the role of various gases in the air. Making connections with real-life, the students were acquainted with the ‘Air Quality Index’, the alarming effects of air pollution resulting in the closure of schools and how we have got back to online mode. An MS Form Quiz was taken up by students as part of their revision of Transport and Communication prior the unit test. Students learnt about sources of water, uses of water, inter-conversion of the forms of water, water cycle, and ways to conserve water through interactive discussions, PowerPoint presentations, real-life connections, and visual snippets. They learnt about and the role of dams in generating electricity in an hydroelectric plant. Students also shared how they would save water as part of their responsibility to save the environment. They implemented it by creating banners with beautiful quotations on the ‘Importance of Education’. The motive behind that was to pay tribute to Maulana Abdul Kalam Azad on his birthday for being the first education minister of free India. The students further learnt several ways to select the text using mouse and keyboard.
