SDG Book ‘Be the Change’:

Worksheet 5 based on SDG 7: Affordable and Clean Energy was done in the class integrated with the SDG (Climate Action) for the month. The difference between non-renewable and renewable energy sources was discussed. Wind Energy was taken up in detail. Comprehension of the poem by Christina Rossetti was done in class along with the questions. Students wrote a paragraph on the thing wind can do as a writing practice.

SCIENCE

Air, water and weather
The month commenced with the recapitulation of concepts like ‘Condensation’, ‘Precipitation’ and ‘Evaporation’ for a better understanding of the water cycle. Further, a ‘WATER CYCLE’ activity was performed where the students displayed all the processes involved in the water cycle using a zip lock transparent bag. Later, the learners were inquired about the different seasons we have in our country. They were asked to enlist some activities they do in different types of season. Thereafter, they learnt about the reason behind the change in seasons and also made a comparison between weather and season.

MATH

The young learners recapitulated the concepts of ‘Division’ and ‘Multiplication’ through discussions, doubt-clarifications and self-check of the Weekend Revision Worksheet. This was followed by the Unit Test and discussion of the question paper.
Students made notes on ‘Proper and Improper Fractions’ for a better learning, and practiced sorting out the two types of fractions. Students were introduced to Mixed Numbers and learnt to read and relate them to Improper Fractions. They practiced to write ‘Improper Fractions’ and ‘Mixed Numbers’ for the shaded portions, as part of a practice during the lesson. Their understanding of Fractions moved to another level with an introduction to ‘Fractions of a Collection or Set’, which was done with the help of real-life examples, video demonstration and practice of related questions, orally and in writing.
Introduction to Measurements commenced with interesting inputs from students on the topic ‘Standard and Non-Standard Units of Measurement’. The novel minds discussed the cons of Non-Standard units and watched certain related videos. They got to know more about uniform and non-uniform, Non-Standard units of measuring lengths and learnt to measure by using a centimeter scale.  Students measured various stationery and other household items, in centimeters and milli-meters, noted down their observations in the notebooks and shared their learning with their peers in the class. They also made elaborate notes on Standard Units of Length and wrote real-life examples of the usage of each unit.

‘The beautiful thing about learning is that nobody can take it away from you.’
The students were given hands on experience through an activity in which they worked on a MS-Word document and applied several formatting features to it such as font type, applying bold, italics and underline effects. They further learnt and applied text alignment, text case and text colour effects and beautified their word documents while presenting them during the class. The students will continue with few more features of MS Word in the month of January.

INDIAN DANCE

In their Indian Dance lessons, the students learnt:
NAVRAS-“Nine emotions of dance”
 Dance form: Classical Kathak
YouTube link:
https://youtu.be/sSdMUaF3-18
 https://youtu.be/BMwy2DmOrSU
 यथोहस्ततथोदृष्टि (Yatho Hasta thatho Drishti)
Wherever your hands go, your eyes will follow,
यथोदृष्टितथोमनः (Yatho Drishti thatho Manah)
Wherever your eyes go, your mind will follow,
यथोमनःतथोभाव (Yatho Manah thatho Bhaava)
Wherever your mind goes, there will be expression of
inner feeling,
यथोभावतथोरस (Yatho Bhaava thatho Rasa)
Where there is expression shown, there will be sentiment evoked.
Nava means "Nine" and Rasa is often translated as "mood", "emotion", "expression" or "sentiment". The Navarasa, in the scriptures refer to the nine expressions that humans often show. These are love (shringaara), laughter (haasya), kind-heartedness or compassion (karuna), anger (roudra), courage (veera), fear (bhayaanaka), disgust (veebhatsya), wonder or surprise (adbhutha) and peace or tranquility (shaanta).

Drama

Forms of Acting: Mono Acting and 5 Ws
Application of their learning:
  • Students performed a Mono Act related to the topic ‘Doctor and the Patient’, and understood how to perform two or three characters at the same time.
In Mono Acting, the actor performs many characters at one time himself to narrate the story or act; however, the time limit for a mono act is generally only 3 minutes.
  • Students were made aware of the 5 Ws of Drama – WHO, WHAT, WHY, WHERE and WHEN.
  • Students learnt the definition of above mentioned 5 Ws and applied their knowledge to write a story in class.
  • The 5 Ws: In investigative writing and research, the five Ws are used to gather information about a story or subject matter. In fact, most writers don't consider a story to be complete unless all five of the Ws have been addressed. The five Ws are who, what, when, where, and why. These question words allow students, writers, and researchers to understand the full scope of the topic being discussed and enable critical thinking. Many of these words can be used in interrogation to tease out the information.

“Success is the sum of small efforts, repeated day in and day out.” – Robert Collien

Opulent October, with all the festive fervor, opened gateways to navigable November during which the students navigated their way towards the second cycle of Unit Tests. The month was mostly marked the rigorous revision of topics to be covered in the unit test.

Literature:
  • A thorough recapitulation of Unit-2 ‘Would you like to live here?’ was done for the UT including Nelson English and Nelson Workbook. Later, Unit-10 ‘The Sound Collector’ was initiated which took the children into the wondrous world of sounds that we find in our homes. Students learnt to investigate the features of a poem by recognizing onomatopoeia, rhyming words and the rhyming pattern/ scheme used in the poem. A unit from the GK book ‘Sound Words’ was also integrated with this unit to ensure that the young learners fully enjoy the magic of onomatopoeia. Consolidated written work was done in the notebook which encapsulated further comprehension of the poem in detail.

The following video link was shared with the students so that they could relate to all the sounds referred in the poem: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zD44jGNRm5U

Grammar:
  • The topic of Conjunctions was already covered in the month of October. To reinforce the concept, written practice was done in notebooks during the class. In this manner, revision of the concept was done for the upcoming UT.

Writing:
  • Students practiced Paragraph Writing as a part of written skill development. A paragraph on ‘Causes of Air Pollution in Gurugram’ was integrated with the monthly SDG 13 Climate Action. Focusing on a particular geographic area aided the students’ awareness of their own region and surroundings, and motivated them to think of a solution at individual level with which they concluded their paragraphs.
  • Another paragraph was given to students to express their feelings of patriotism with the prompts “If I had been (name of the gallantry award winner), what would I have done for my nation? OR (name of the gallantry award winner) motivates to... Children had to write on any one of the topics. This topic was taken as a part of CBSE’s initiative of the Veer Gatha Project in the honor of Gallantry Award Winners.

Needless to mention that both the topics were thoroughly discussed and Key Points were provided to ignite creativity in students’ young minds.

Students were introduced to the monthly theme “Tolerance”. They understood that tolerance means respecting the opinions of others even if they are different from our own opinions, valuing everyone, avoiding stereotypes, living together peacefully.
