Subject Integration week: 9th Aug to 13th Aug"What we want is to see the child in pursuit of knowledge, and not knowledge in pursuit of the child". George Bernard Shaw One way of discovering the curriculum with the children is integrating it across the board with other subjects and to do that we organized a Subject Integration Week in school during the week 9th August to 13th August. We integrated Language with Performing Arts through an array of activities. Integrated study brought together diverse disciplines in a comprehensive manner, enabling students to develop a meaningful understanding of the complex associations and influences within a topic. ‘Envirophilia-A Fancy Dress Party’ was organized for Grade I students. The little learners looked super excited as they came dressed on the theme of Plants and Aquatic Animals and spoke about the ‘Plant or Animal ‘that they played the role of, using their drama skills. They also carried props to convey their message. They explored the importance of SDG 14- ‘Life below Water’ and SDG 15- ‘Life on Land’ and made other students aware about them through their presentations. ‘The Edible Tales- Story on my Plate’ turned out to be a successful venture for Grade II students as they narrated their yummilicious stories with the help of creatively crafted fruit and vegetable salad using their vivid imagination and creative skills. This approach further developed the children’s ability to transfer their learning to other settings and correlate their sub conscious selves to conscious selves. The class was divided into Performers group and Audience group for these activities. The audience judged their peers’ performance on a Peer Assessment Rubric. This was only possible because they were able to more closely relate to real-world linguistic connections in an integrated curriculum approach. We were amazed by the meticulous efforts shown by the students. It was altogether an amazing week and we loved every bit of it. Independence day celebrationSuncity School 37D celebrated India's 75th Independence Day with unprecedented patriotic fervour. The gamut of celebration started with our Principal Ms.Guneet Ohri hoisting the Tricolour with the national anthem echoing in the campus. The Independence Day Special Assembly was very well coordinated and conducted by our confident and enthusiastic 6th Graders virtually. It was a moment of great pride for the newly elected council members for whom their parents had the honour of pinning their prefect badges. The toppers of last year’s Olympiads, academic scholarship holders and winning houses were also felicitated for their excellent performance in the virtual presence of Maj. Gen. Kulpreet Singh (Retd), the Chief Guest for the occasion. Gen Kulpreet congratulated the students and encouraged them to take on the mantle of leadership seriously. "Ask not what your country can do for you ask what can you do for your country.” is what he quoted to motivate the council members. He also spoke about the his fellow soldiers who sacrificed their lives for our country. He appreciated the Principal’s leadership under whose guidance the school is emerging to be one of the best in Gurgaon. Our talented students paid homage to the martyrs through their impeccable song and dance performances. The event concluded with the Inter-House Patriotic Song competition which was assessed by the eminent judges Mr.Vikul Sharma & Ms.Riya Maity Sinha. The mellifluous performances by the students were highly appreciated by the judges. The Principal, Ms Guneet Ohri, addressed the gathering by congratulating all students, staff and parents for enthusiastically uniting to celebrate and honour the nation despite the current tough and troubling times. Inter-House Mental Math competitionMathematics is a subject that the students should build upon and master throughout their educational experience, for it forms a strong foundation and aids in understanding how the world works and is a critical skill 21st century for learners, thereby allowing them to make important connections between these mathematical concepts that are being taught and the real world in which they live. Keeping this in mind the students from Grades 3 onwards participated in an InterHouse Mental Math competition held this month. The students from the 4 houses - Atlantic, Arctic, Pacific and Indian participated in a tough competition held on a virtual platform. There were 2 rounds - selection round done on MS Form application and the Final round (fastest finger first) conducted on Kahoot. Amidst nail biting finish, scores tied - the whole competition gave an insight to the students ability to calculate mentally faster. mathematicsOur young suncitizens continued to hone the skill of Adding and Subtracting four-digit numbers in the month of August. They practiced addition and subtraction of four-digit numbers by regrouping in their notebooks and applied their understanding by attempting quiz on MS Forms, Kahoot and Quizizz. They were introduced to word problems for the number operations and were guided how to solve a word problem using RUCSAC method. Taking their learning further to an experiential mode and to enhance their logical thinking and reasoning skills, the students enjoyed making different creative patterns using the cubes in their Shin Edu sessions. Mr.Takehiro Nakamura & Mr.Takanobu Tanaka from the Shin Edu Power program were present to observe the students in class and were happy with the students response to their program. scienceIn their Science lessons, students started their inquiry into learning about ‘BIRDS’. They learnt about the unique characteristic features of different birds with the help of a live worksheet. They watched videos and related PowerPoint presentations to understand the different types of beaks, feet and claws and feathers. Students were amazed to see the variety of techniques the birds use to build their nests. PARTS OF A PLANT As a prior knowledge assessment to the next topic, a quick recapitulation was done by question & answer session to ascertain how much the students know about plants and its many parts. They also learnt about the types of roots – fibrous and tap root, categorized the plants and shrubs under the two types and learnt their functions. Some students shared few real samples of the roots in the class as well. Video link: http://projectbeak.org/adaptations/build.htm https://youtu.be/2pVKqxv=qC4M social scienceIn sync with the monthly theme, students learnt about animals in the month of August. As an introductory activity, they enjoyed the virtual tour to forest, where they saw many animals, their habitat and listened to the various sounds that they make. As a way to organize and recall what has been learnt, students used a flowchart and See-Think-Wonder strategy and made note of the information. Students enjoyed learning about physical features of various animals, their habitats and how different animals adapted to their surroundings to survive. To understand animals belonging to different states, they researched about the states they belong to, and marked their location on the Map of India enhancing their map marking skills. They thoroughly enjoyed learning the historical perspective of silk thread, the life cycle of a silkworm through an informative video on Sericulture. They understood about ‘Poaching’ animals and were sensitized on the same. Information & communication technology (ict)No matter how difficult it is to understand and demonstrate their learning, the students of Suncity, reflect it with their unique proficiency on virtual platform, especially when it is about ICT. Students learnt about the differences between the Computer Hardware and the Software using real life examples around them. In continuation, they also understood the contrast between the System software and Application software. As part of Application Software, Paint 3D was introduced to them. They learnt how to draw 2D images, further converting them into 3D and clubbing them using the mixed reality feature in Paint 3D. They enjoyed their lessons and understood how Augmented Reality works on different platform as compared to Virtual Reality. englishThe month of August encouraged the curious students of Grade III to improve their observational and creative skills. Reading text from the supplementary reader, Units 1-4, tremendously improved the LSRW skills of the learners. Adventure is food for the imagination, one of our most important forms of intelligence. Students of Grade III ventured into an epic journey where excitement and action played a major role by taking them to distant places by learning about the genre ‘Adventure’ Individual reading was taken up with the students. They connected ideas to improve reading comprehension thus improving their command of listening. Through an MS Form on Robinson Crusoe Quiz, they applied their comprehension skills and examined information to answer the questions thoroughly. Subject integration week helped students explore their writing skills integrating with SDG -14, Life under water. Writing humorous limericks was fun for the enthusiastic learners. It helped them learn rhyming, rhythms, syllables, and patterns. The students wrote poems on their favorite water animal that got students captivated on reading and writing limericks using AABBA pattern and improving communication skills. Creativity improved as the keen students benefitted by improving their vocabulary, phonetic rhythm, and developing self-expression by reciting the poem ‘Sorry, Sorry, Sorry'.
